England bounce back with huge triumph against Bangladesh
After conceding 364 in the first innings, the Bangladesh batting fell apart, barring some brave batting from Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim.
Reece Topley was the destroyer-in-chief with a fine 4/43 in his quota of overs.
In the morning, England put their foot on the pedal and put up an aggressive showing at HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala.
Dawid Malan led the charge with an exceptional ton, while he got good support from Joe Root (82 from 68) and Jonny Bairstow (52 from 59).
For Bangladesh, Mahedi Hasan's 4/71 and Shoriful Islam's 3/75 stood out.
Reece Topley showed top skill with the new ball to pick three crucial Bangladesh wickets in the first Powerplay. Tanzid Hasan was the first to go, caught behind by Bairstow off Topley. The left-arm pacer then had Najmul Hossain Shanto off the very next ball, who gifted a catch to the Point fielder.
Topley's best, however, came in the sixth over. He cleaned up Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan for merely one to derail the chase.
Another wicket for Chris Woakes and Bangladesh were four down by the ninth over. Litton Das was the only Bangladesh batter to get into a good rhythm and played some beautiful shots to push the Bangladesh scoring rate up. He brought up his 38-ball half-century in the 11th over.
Along with the experienced Mushfiqur Rahim, Das helped Bangladesh cross 100. However, once he was caught behind in the 21st over off Woakes, the Asian side were all but out of chase.
Rahim (51) and Towhid Hridoy (39) fought for Bangladesh but the England target proved to be too much eventually.
Dawid Malan smacked 140 runs from 107 balls to put England in command as they look to get their ICC Men's Cricket World Cup title defence back on track against Bangladesh. He hit 16 fours and five sixes during his knock. He was eventually dismissed in the 38th over by Mahedi Hasan.
Malan's wicket gave Bangladesh little breathing space, as other England batters continued going for their shots. However, the Bangladesh bowlers managed to pick a number of crucial wickets.
The Tigers managed to pick six wickets for 66 runs in the final Powerplay. However, by this time England had managed to get to 364/9 in Dharamsala.
This was their third-highest total in Men's Cricket World Cup. Their second-highest score, incidentally, came in the previous World Cup in Cardiff against the same opponents.
Earlier, Jonny Bairstow was selected for his 100th ODI and made a scintillating start alongside Malan as the opening pair ensured England were in a strong position at the end of the Powerplay on 61/0.
Both batters went on to reach their fifty as England passed 100 without loss until Shakib knocked over Bairstow's castle for 52.
Malan continued to punish the Bangladesh bowling as Joe Root joined him at the crease and their entertaining partnership pushed the defending champions to 149/1 at the halfway mark.
The 36-year-old brought up his first Cricket World Cup century with a quick single after dominating proceedings with two sixes and 12 fours on the way to triple figures.
Malan was eventually bowled by Sheikh Mahedi Hasan while trying to push the scoring along but by then England were 266/2 and eyeing off a huge total.
Pacer Reece Topley was named for England in place of spinning all-rounder Moeen Ali, while Ben Stokes remains on the sidelines.
The Cricket World Cup 2019 champions faced a confident Bangladesh outfit that opened their campaign with a convincing six-wicket victory over Afghanistan and had previously dumped England out of the 2015 tournament.
Shakib and fellow spinner Mehidy Hassan Miraz set up the win over Afghanistan with three wickets each, while the latter also steered the Asia nation toward victory with the bat and scored 57 runs in a player of the match performance.
Mahedi Hasan was added to the Bangladesh XI in a further boost to their spin options.
While spin loomed as the main threat again at HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, both teams were also able to call on express pace to target the opposition batters.
Mark Wood was below his best against a rampant New Zealand top order and finished with figures of 0/55 from only five hours, so will be out to improve on that display when he takes on Bangladesh.
Taskin Ahmed impressed for Bangladesh against Afghanistan with 1/32 before spin took control of the contest and will again be pivotal to his team's hopes again England.
