Australia, Bangladesh notch key wins at U19 World Cup

Australia breezed past Sri Lanka while Bangladesh secure their first win of the tournament in both sides final group-stage fixtures of the ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2026.

Australia secured a nine-wicket win just 12 overs into the second innings.

Australia’s decision to field first after winning the toss was fully vindicated by a ruthless bowling display that saw Sri Lanka bundled out for just 58.

Charles Lachmund set the tone early, removing both openers Viran Chamuditha and Dimantha Mahavithana in the third over to hand the defending champions a perfect start. William Byrom then took charge, dismissing Dulnith Sigera to claim the first of his five wickets and reduce Sri Lanka to a precarious 3/3.

Byrom continued to run through the batting line-up, removing skipper Vimath Dinsara before striking twice in quick succession to dismiss Kavija Gamage and Adam Hilmy, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 30/6.

William Byrom picked five wickets in just 41 balls.

Haydon Schiller accounted for Chamika Heentigala, whose 14 off 21 balls was the highest score of the innings, while Kasey Barton picked up the wickets of Sethmika Seneviratne and Rasith Nimsara. Byrom then wrapped up the innings by dismissing Kugathas Mathulan, completing a superb five-wicket haul.

Australia cruised through the chase, remaining largely untroubled as they hunted down the modest target. Steve Hogan anchored the innings with an unbeaten 24, while Nitesh Samuel chipped in with a steady 19* off 40 balls as Australia sealed the win in just 11.5 overs. Rasith Nimsara picked up the lone wicket for Sri Lanka, dismissing Will Malajczuk.

The win means Australia head into the next round unbeaten from their three outings.

Bangladesh opted to bowl first and made an instant impact, striking twice inside the opening three overs. Amrinder Gill and Arjun Mahesh were dismissed early, leaving USA reeling at 6/2.

Opener Sahil Garg then steadied the innings alongside skipper Utkarsh Srivastava, with the pair adding 51 runs - the highest partnership of the USA innings.

Shahriar Ahmed turned the game further in Bangladesh’s favour with two quick wickets, removing Garg (35 off 60) and Shiv Shani. Iqbal Hossain followed it up by bowling Srivastava for 39 off 65 balls, before Rizan Hossain struck twice in quick succession to leave USA struggling at 128/7.

A late resistance came through Adnit Jhamb and Adit Kappa, who put together a vital 43-run partnership. However, Al Fahad broke the stand by dismissing Kappa for his second wicket of the innings. The final two wickets fell off the last two deliveries as USA were bowled out for 199, with Adnit Jhamb top-scoring with an unbeaten 68 off 69 balls.

Bangladesh made a steady start to the chase as the openers put on 78 runs for the first wicket. The partnership was broken when Sahil Garg produced a sharp catch-and-bowled to dismiss Zawad Abrar, who scored 47 off 42 balls. Soon after, Utkarsh Srivastava removed the other set batter, Rifat Beg, for 30 off 55 deliveries.

Skipper Azizul Hakim Tamim then combined with Kalam Siddiki Aleen to add a decisive 88-run stand that firmly swung the game in Bangladesh’s favour. Tamim led from the front with a composed 64 off 82 balls before being dismissed by Ritvik Appidi in the 39th over.

Kalam Siddiki Aleen (30 off 55) and Rizan Hossain (20 off 16) then calmly completed the chase, guiding Bangladesh to their first win of the tournament and sealing their Super Six spot.
