Defending champions Australia name strong CWC25 squad

The seven-time Cricket World Cup winners walk into the upcoming edition as one of the favourites to go all the way.

Alyssa Healy will be taking charge of a strong 15-member Australia squad for the upcoming ICC Women's Cricket World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.

The defending champions, who claimed their seventh title last time around in New Zealand, boast an array of riches in their lineup.

Ten of the 15 members named featured in the previous edition of the tournament back in 2022, with skipper Alyssa Healy taking charge of the squad in her third Cricket World Cup.

Healy will be complemented by the likes of Ellyse Perry, Beth Mooney, Ash Gardner and Tahlia McGrath, who bring in a wealth of experience.

Left-arm spinner Sophie Molineux is also included and set to make her return from a knee injury during the World Cup, with Alana King and Georgia Wareham providing further depth to the spin bowling department.

Young batter Georgia Voll makes the cut and is in line for her first World Cup appearance, while Nicole Faltum and Charli Knott will be part of the Australia squad for the three-match ODI series against India that is prior to the 50-over showcase.

Australia skipper Alyssa Healy is happy with the balance of his squad and is excited at the prospect of the Cricket World Cup being played in India starting September 30.

"It's a great place to play cricket, also a great place to tour," Healy told reporters.

"The culture is very different but I think the way they just love their cricket, approach it and are fanatical about their cricket, think it's a great place to go as a cricketer.

"I'm looking forward to that obviously but the cricket conditions pose a different challenge to our group, which I think we are really well placed for.

"We've got so much depth in every area that whatever conditions are thrown at us, we'll be well placed to handle that. So, I'm really excited for the strength of the squad."

The 35-year-old also expressed anticipation within the group of becoming the first team to win back-to-back Women's Cricket World Cup titles since 1988.

"I don't think anyone has gone back to back for a while and there's a lot of those sort of milestones that we'd love to achieve.

"Winning World Cups is special, they're the pinnacle of our sport. So, we know we've got to go there and play consistently.

"It's probably where we fell short in the UAE (2024 T20 World Cup), we got done on one bad day. We know we need 10 good results to go our way.

"I feel like we are in a very good place to do that and it will be really special for the group if that unfolds."
