ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy Day 1 wrap

The opening day of the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy saw Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Scotland, and Tanzania securing wins.

Thailand v Netherlands

Hosts Thailand came out on top against the Netherlands, securing a 23-run victory.

The Netherlands won the toss and asked Thailand to bat.

Natthakan Chantham top scored for the Asian side with 39, while keeper-batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai and Phannita Maya provided able support down the order with 26 runs apiece to take them to 117/7 from their 20 overs.

Caroline de Lange (2/25) and Silver Siegers (2/11) contributed two wickets each with the ball for the Dutch.

In the second innings, Thipatcha Putthawong, Suleeporn Laomi, and Onnicha Kamchomphu were on their mark with the ball, sharing two wickets apiece, as the Netherlands were bowled out with seven balls to spare.

Skipper Babette de Leede (25), Robine Rijke (23), and De Lange (21) showed promising signs, but wickets at regular intervals kept Thailand in command.

Papua New Guinea v United Arab Emirates

A solid all-round display with the bat and ball from the UAE guided them to a comprehensive triumph against PNG in their tournament opener.

Despite skipper Brenda Tau’s (53) best efforts with the bat, PNG managed to score only 94 runs from their 20 overs.

Samaira Dharnidharka and Michelle Botha, with 2/17 and 2/18, respectively, put in their best foot forward with the ball for UAE.

Chasing 95, opening batter Theertha Satish led the charge with an unbeaten 45-run knock that took them over the line in just 15.2 overs, sealing an eight-wicket win.

Scotland v Uganda

Scotland’s bowling unit came up good in their campaign opener, defending 115 runs with a 15-run victory against Uganda.

Opting to bat, Scotland's opening batter Darcey Carter (54* off 50) saw through the 20 overs to help them put up a competitive 115/9 score on the board.

Megan McColl pitched in with 32 valuable runs to the board, playing a crucial role in Scotland crossing the 100-run mark.

Janet Mbabazi was the star with the ball for Uganda, with three crucial wickets from her three-over spell that included a maiden.

Chasing 116 for the win, Uganda's top-order gave their best in a crucial chase with Esther Iloku (24), Immaculate Nakisuuyi (36) and Rita Musamali (20) anchoring the chase but disciplined bowling from Scotland meant that the African side slumped to a 15-run defeat.

Abtaha Maqsood (2/20) and Priyanaz Chatterji (2/26) were the pick of the bowling effort in the second innings.

Namibia v Tanzania

Tanzania pulled off a solid chase in style, with eight wickets and three overs to spare against Namibia in a contest that saw valiant knocks from both sides.

After Namibia skipper Sune Wittmann opted to bat first, she led the way for her side with a commanding 53-run knock, while her opening partner Kayleen Green added 20 runs.

Much-needed contributions came down the order but they were restricted to 118/5, with Mwanamvua Ushanga scalping two wickets for Tanzania.

Chasing 119, Saum Mtae’s made an unbeaten 55, adding a vital 63-run opening stand with her partner Fatuma Kibasu (26) in the process.

Namibia picked up two wickets in the space of three balls to get back in the game, but Hudaa Omary came in with a handy unbeaten 28 to get Tanzania off to a winning start in the tournament.
