ICC Women's Emerging Nations Trophy Day 2 wrap

Papua New Guinea, Netherlands, Namibia and Scotland registered wins on the second day of the tournament in Thailand.

Thailand v Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea edged hosts Thailand by eight runs in a low-scoring thriller to claim their first win of the Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy.

After opting to bat, PNG recovered from 23/5 to post a competitive 92/9, courtesy crucial contributions from Isabel Toua (25) and Erani Pokana (16). Their rebuild came after Suleeporn Laomi’s three-wicket seventh over sparked a collapse, supported well by Sunida Chaturongrattana’s 2-16.

In reply, Thailand skipper Naruemol Chaiwai fought hard with a determined 44, but regular wickets left the hosts short of the target. Pauke Siaka starred for PNG with the ball, delivering a superb 4/12, including a clutch maiden, to seal the win.

Netherlands v United Arab Emirates

Netherlands secured their first win of the tournament with a composed four-wicket victory over UAE.

Batting first, UAE reached 93 in 17.4 overs, with Heena Hotchandani chipping in a handy middle-order 33. The Dutch bowlers struck at regular intervals, with Iris Zwilling (2-20), Robine Rijke (2-11), Frederique Overdijk (2-20) and Caroline de Lange (2-20) sharing the wickets.

In the chase, Sterre Kalis and Phebe Molkenboer laid the platform with a 55-run opening stand. A brief wobble in the middle overs kept UAE in the contest, led by Vaishnave Mahesh’s 3-22, but Kalis’s composed 40 ensured the Netherlands crossed the line.

Uganda v Namibia

Namibia registered their first points of the campaign with a gritty 12-run victory over Uganda in another low-scoring encounter.

Put in to bat, Namibia worked their way to 83/8, driven by useful knocks from Kayleen Green (21), Yasmine Khan (19) and Naomi Benjamin (18*). Uganda’s attack kept things tight, with Sarah Akiteng (2-10), Immaculate Nakisuuyi (2-16) and Malisa Ariokot (2-12) each claiming two wickets.

Uganda appeared well on track at 49/1 late in the 13th over, but Namibia’s bowlers held their nerve, triggering a collapse to restrict them to 71/7 and secure a hard-fought win.

Scotland v Tanzania

Scotland made it two wins from two after holding off a spirited Tanzania by five runs in a high-scoring contest.

Batting first, Scotland were powered by an outstanding unbeaten 76 off 62 from Darcey Carter, with support from Ellen Watson (23) and Priyanaz Chatterji (19) as they posted 153/5. Perice Kamunya impressed for Tanzania with 2-33.

Tanzania’s reply featured strong contributions from Saum Mtae (23), Fatuma Kibasu (28), Hudaa Omary (38*) and Jenipher Kimaro (23), keeping them in the hunt throughout. But a cluster of wickets at the death halted their charge, leaving them just short. Carter capped off a superb all-round performance with figures of 4-23, including a maiden, to guide Scotland home.
