ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy Day 6 wrap

UAE and Netherlands bagged important wins against Thailand and Scotland respectively to make things tight at the top.

Points Table as it stands

Thailand v UAE

The UAE went level on points with Thailand with a seven-wicket victory in Bangkok in the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy on Friday.

Thailand who put UAE in to bat, started well grabbing four wickets inside the first six overs as Theertha Satish provided lone resistance up top with a knock of 10 runs in 12 deliveries.

A brief partnership between Michelle Botha and Samira Dharnidharka steadied the UAE innings before UAE lost five wickets for just 16 runs and were eventually bundled out for 80.

Phannita Maya, Sunida Chaturongrattana and Onnicha Kamchomphu bagged two wickets each for Thailand.

In response, Thailand got off to a good start thanks to Nattaya Boochatham who scored 14 runs off as many deliveries but they kept losing wickets at regular intervals during their chase.

Suwanan Khiaoto held fort for the hosts scoring 24 off 24 deliveries but Vaishnave Mahesh's incredible spell of 4/10 helped the UAE bowl out Thailand for 73.

Esh Oza and Michelle Botha also provided the support bagging three and two wickets respectively as UAE won their fourth match of the tournament to go third in the table just behind Thailand on net run rate.

Uganda v Tanzania

Uganda cruised to a seven-wicket win over Tanzania to post their second win of the tournament.

Having won the toss and opted to field first, Uganda put the opponents on backfoot early with couple of run outs helping the bowlers to dominate the proceedings against Tanzania.

No batter except Fatima Kibasu registered a double-digit score as the Tanzanian innings was wrapped up for 54. Immaculate Nakisuuyi grabbed two wickets for Uganda in what was a complete team effort with the ball.

Janet Mbabazi and Esther Iloku gave Uganda a solid start with the bat that extinguished any hopes of a Tanzanian fightback. Although Uganda lost three wickets, Iloku’s unbeaten knock of 28 ensured they had no problems in getting over the line and climbing to sixth place in the table.

Namibia v Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea (PNG) beat Namibia in a thriller as they won the match by one run to bag their third victory of the tournament.

Put into bat by Namibia, PNG’s top order were amongst the runs with contributions from Naoani Vare (15 runs off 39 deliveries), captain Brenda Tau (30 runs off 29 deliveries) and Henao Thomas (14 runs off 12 deliveries).

But Namibia bounced back in the middle overs to put the brakes on PNG. However Erani Pokana’s knock of 17 runs off 19 deliveries ensured PNG posted a total of 94.

PNG came out firing with the ball reducing Namibia to 17/4 inside the first seven overs. But a partnership between Yasmeen Khan and captain Sune Wittmann brought Namibia right back into the contest. After Wittmann’s dismissal, Wilka Mwatile carried the Namibian counter-attack forward, but PNG struck at the right time to put an end to her knock of 24 runs from 18 deliveries.

Yasmeen continued to battle on for Namibia but PNG held their nerves to bag the win on the final ball as Khan was run out.

Pauke Siaka was the pick of the bowlers for PNG as she bagged three wickets conceding just 15 runs in her four overs.

Scotland v Netherlands

Netherlands produced a commanding display with bat and ball to defeat table-toppers Scotland by 27 runs.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, the Netherlands batters backed the captain’s call in some style. Despite losing Iris Zwilling on the second delivery of the innings, the Netherlands powered on thanks to knocks from Phebe Molkenboer (32 runs off 34 balls), Babette de Leede (15 runs off 14 deliveries), and Robine Rijke (27 runs off 19 balls).

But the standout performer was Sterre Kalis who scored an unbeaten 55 to take the Dutch score to 148/7 at the end of 20 overs.

Katherine Fraser (39 runs off 32 balls) and Sarah Bryce (31 runs off 30 deliveries) provided Scotland with the perfect start to this stiff chase but Caroline de Lange got rid of both the batters to keep the Netherlands ahead in the game.

Zwilling chipped in with crucial wickets as Scotland could only manage 121/8 in their 20 overs and fell short of the total to lose their first match of the competition.
