Rain mars Rahmat's big day

Afghanistan batsman scores maiden ton as Najibullah smashes fifty to lift side to 283 for 4 against Scotland before play is called off

Rain mars Rahmat's big day - Cricket News
Rahmat Shah played an excellent innings.
Persistent rain in Edinburgh forced the first One-Day International between Afghanistan and Scotland to be abandoned on Monday (July 4). Rahmat Shah starred with his maiden ODI ton, and was involved in an unbroken 157-run fifth-wicket partnership with Najibullah Zadran as Afghanistan recovered from a shaky start to reach 283 for 4 in 47.2 overs before heavy showers forced the match to be called off.

Put in to bat under typically overcast conditions at the Grange Cricket Club ground, Afghanistan slipped early as Noor Ali Zadran, the opener, fell in the third over. Mohammad Shahzad and Javed Ahmadi added 32 runs for the second wicket before Shahzad was trapped in front by Alasdair Evans.

Ahmadi and Rahmat then associated for a 53-run third-wicket stand to provide some stability, but Safyaan Sharif, the right-arm pacer, struck to dismiss Ahmadi for 39. After Asghar Stanikzai, the captain, fell in the 31st over, the duo of Rahmat and Najibullah took control of the innings. Rahmat scored a half-century before rain interrupted play for almost an hour.

Rahmat and Najibullah were at their aggressive best when play resumed, finding the fence repeatedly and scoring runs in a flurry. Najibullah brought up his third ODI half-century, taking only 53 balls for his 89 not out, smashing five sixes and nine fours along the way. Rahmat's maiden ODI ton came in 123 deliveries, including eight boundaries and a six, off what would be the penultimate ball of the innings.

Just as Afghanistan was about to wrap up its innings, rain interrupted play again, only for the match to be called off this time.

Brad Wheal finished with two wickets for Scotland, while Evans and Sharif had one each.

The sides will play the second and final ODI on Wednesday.
