Player Bio

Born on 28 January, 1873, Montague “Monty” Noble is considered one of the greatest all-rounders ever produced by Australia.

Brilliant as a captain, nimble in the field, and a star with bat and ball, Noble excelled at everything cricket had to offer and he is today immortalised by the Noble Stand at his home ground of the SCG.

A medium pacer of the highest calibre, Noble took 121 wickets at 25.00 across his 42 Tests, picking up 15 across his first two matches against England in 1898. One of the most complete players of the late 19th and early 20th century, he also scored 1997 runs at 30.25, with one century to go alongside his 16 fifties.

He captained Australia 15 times and is said to have pioneered the approach of leaving the covers open to induce outside edges.
