Bangladesh finished their ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup with a flourish as they saw off hosts Zimbabwe by 74 runs in Harare.

A captain’s innings from Azizul Hakim Tamim helped Bangladesh to 253 for nine from their 50 overs, and that proved more than enough.

Iqbal Hossain was the pick of the bowlers, doing early damage to the chase on his way to figures of five for 24.

Bangladesh too strong for Zimbabwe

Bangladesh will leave the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup on a positive note after a convincing 74-run victory over Zimbabwe in Harare.

Defeat to England in their first Super Six encounter had ended any hopes of reaching the semi-finals, but this performance showed what Bangladesh are capable of achieving.

Having elected to bat, Bangladesh lost Rifat Beg (15) early bringing skipper Azizul Hakim Tamim to the crease.

He added 46 with Zawad Abrar (25) and then 73 with Rizan Hossan (47) to lay the platform for a competitive total.

When Azizul departed for 59, there was still work to do, but nine of the 11 Bangladeshi batters made it to double figures.

That included a quickfire 23 not out from Al Fahad at number 10, to help Bangladesh to 253 for nine.

He and Iqbal Hossain added 20 for the last wicket off just four deliveries before the pair combined with the new ball.

Iqbal wreaked havoc as Zimbabwe were quickly reduced to 15 for three, later returning to complete a five-wicket haul.

Simbarashe Mudzengerere, the Zimbabwe skipper, provided some resistance on his way to 70, but wickets continued to tumble at the other end, leaving the home side 109 for eight.

He was finally joined by Shelton Mazvitorera (42 not out), who had earlier taken two wickets, and the pair proceeded to add 64 for the ninth wicket.

The return of Al Fahad finally put a stop to the fun as he took the last two wickets to seal the win.
