It becomes the highest level of umpire education and accreditation offered by the ICC to its Members under the Training and Education framework
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the launch of its new ICC Umpire Level 2 Course from 31 October, the highest level of umpire education accreditation currently offered by the ICC to its Members within the ICC’s global Training and Education framework.
The news follows the ICC’s Umpire Level 2 Global Workforce Training in Manila, Philippines, which brought together selected Master Educators from across the ICC’s five regions. Held from 26–29 October, the four-day programme featured 20 participants, representing 13 nations from both Full and Associate Members.
The training prepared the global workforce to deliver the new Level 2 programme consistently across different Member environments, with a focus on common course-delivery methods, materials and assessment competencies.
The ICC Umpire Level 2 Course will build on the existing Foundation and Level 1 umpiring pathways, creating a further structured opportunity for umpire development designed to further increase the competitiveness of international cricket.
It will further support the ICC’s work to strengthen officiating standards across its Members and will be delivered through the ICC’s regionally distributed network of Master Educators.
The first regional Level 2 course begins in Manila on 31 October and will run until 3 November, featuring 18 officials from eight ICC Members.
ICC General Manager – Development, Will Glenwright, said: “The launch of the ICC Umpire Level 2 Course is an important step in strengthening the pathway for match officials around the world and ensuring that all of our Members have equal access to high-quality, consistent umpire training and education that can ultimately contribute to the improved competitiveness of international cricket.
“Bringing together experienced educators from across all five ICC regions in Manila has allowed us to build the kind of capability required to deliver this training. It reflects the considerable work of our Development team, regional teams and educators to enhance Member capability, raise officiating standards and create clear opportunities for umpires to continue their development.”
ICC Umpire Level 2 Master Educator and International Umpire, Langton Rusere, added: “Throughout my international umpiring career, I have learned that becoming a good umpire is not just about knowing the Laws of Cricket, but about having the confidence, judgement and ability to make the right decisions under pressure. The launch of the ICC Umpire Level 2 Course is an important milestone in raising umpiring standards globally.
“What excites me most is the opportunity to pass on our experience and knowledge to the next generation of umpires, particularly the umpires from associate members. Through this programme, we are not simply educating umpires; we are building a stronger, more confident and capable officiating workforce for the future of our game.”
The ICC’s global Training and Education programmes have recorded more than 50,000 course completions to date, providing ICC Members worldwide with learning and development opportunities in coaching, umpiring and pitch curator education.
In umpiring alone, more than 16,000 course participations have been recorded across the existing Foundation, Level 1 and Tutor Level 1 programmes.
The launch of the ICC Umpire Level 2 Course builds on this progress and introduces the highest level of umpire education and accreditation currently available to ICC Member resources.
