Eyman Fatima is ready to play with the confidence of someone who has made 100 ODI appearances, despite having only one appearance to her name.

The 20-year-old batter has been selected for her first ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup, having made her debut two weeks before the tournament in Pakistan’s series against South Africa.

While she is still very new at international level, Eyman is ready to contribute for the team on the biggest stage.

“It is the dream of most people to be a part of an ICC World Cup, especially the ODI World Cup,” she said.

“I am very thankful, and my whole family is very happy that I am included in the squad, and I will give my best and win matches for my team.

“I was not surprised to be selected. I am confident that I have done a lot of practice, and I believe in myself.

“I will do my best and will try to win matches. I want to put out performances that can get my team out of critical conditions. I want to be the person to chase the target and get the win for our team.”

Pakistan won only one of their matches at the 2022 edition, beating West Indies in a rain-affected match.

Since then, Eyman has represented her country in the inaugural ICC Under-19 Women’s Cricket World Cup in 2023.

She top-scored for Pakistan, including 65 not out in the win over Rwanda, followed by an unbeaten 62 in a 10-wicket win over Zimbabwe.

Eyman made her senior international debut in August this year, during Pakistan’s tour of Ireland, with a high score of 23.

As a relative unknown on the international stage, Eyman reveals her game is characterised by big hits, so it is no surprise who her inspiration is.

She added: “When I was younger, I watched cricket, but I don’t remember anyone; I only remember Shahid Afridi.

“I mostly watched him playing, and I said I wanted to play like he did for Pakistan, so I try to play like him.

“I have put in a lot of hard work, and I want to give my best, I was selected in the team because of my game, and mostly my game is big hits, and maybe that is what the coaches were looking for.

“I am very confident because I do a lot of hard work and our training sessions and camps, we have learnt a lot from our coaches.”

Someone Eyman has also learnt a lot from is captain, Fatima Sana – the all-rounder will lead Pakistan in her first ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup as captain.

Still just 23 years old, she has already established herself as Pakistan’s key player on the pitch, and, as Eyman reveals, off it too.

“Because this is my first World Cup, I am learning a lot from my teammates, like my captain,” she said.

“But all of our senior players are very supportive, they are supporting me in everything. I have learned a lot of things from them, like their game, their fitness, their activity and how they perform in grounds.

“Our captain, Fatima Sana supports us a lot. She is a very good captain, she supports everyone, and every teammate is equal for her.

“If someone is looking down, she will pick up the person and give them confidence. She is a very good all-rounder, the best all-rounder.”
