Thailand have been crowned winners of the inaugural ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy after beating Scotland by three wickets at AIT Ground in Bangkok on Sunday.

Scotland, who were unbeaten in their first five fixtures slipped to fourth place in the final points table on net run rate after their second loss in the tournament levelled them in points with Thailand, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Netherlands.

Scotland began the day as leaders of the points table, but the UAE overtook them, taking second place in the final log standings after beating Namibia by 28 runs, followed by the Netherlands who claimed third place thanks to their six-wicket victory over Uganda.

The deciding match was the hosts’ encounter against a formidable Scotland outfit who had been unbeaten in the tournament until their first loss against the Netherlands on Friday.

Thailand left no stone unturned on Sunday, bouncing back emphatically from their own defeat to the UAE on Friday. They restricted Scotland to 63 runs in 15.1 overs after the visitors elected to bat first.

The heroes with the ball were Thipatcha Putthawong and Suleeporn Laomi who returned exceptional figures of four for 17 and three for 11 respectively as everyone in the Scottish team failed to reach double figures on the scorecard.

Scotland did their best to fight back claiming three wickets in the first three overs of the match, but scores of 17 not out and 16 from captain Naruemol Chaiwai and Natthakan Chantham ensured the hosts’ success in the end.

The runs flowed more freely at the same venue in the afternoon where the UAE beat Namibia. They posted the most runs of the day – 153 for three in their 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

Half-centuries from the opening pair Esha Oza (68 off 49 balls) and Theertha Satish (57 not out from 52 balls) and a 114-run partnership set up a match-winning total for their team.

Namibia’s reply was riddled with tumbling wickets with only Wilka Mwatile (54 not out off 34 balls) bringing up a score that could challenge the opposition.

The UAE’s Vaishnave Mahesh and captain Oza took two wickets each to help restrict Namibia to 125/7 at the end of their allotted overs.

The Netherlands restricted Uganda to 111 for six in their 20 overs after asking them to bat first. Uganda put up a good fight with runs for Prosscovia Alako (34), Stephani Nampiina (21) and Immaculate Nakisuuyi (16) but victory was not meant to be.

Sterre Kalis (32) and captain Babette De Leede (17) brought stability to the innings after the loss of openers, Iris Zilling (11) and Phebe Molkenboer (four). Robine Rijke then scored an unbeaten 36 runs from 31 deliveries to get their team to victory with 5.1 overs to spare.

Finally, Papua New Guinea (PNG) won their last match, beating Tanzania by 20 runs, defending their 100-run total by restricting their opponents to 80 for eight. Henao Thomas made 47 before Pauke Siaka returned figures of three for 10. PNG won four of their seven matches including a win over champions, Thailand and they finished in fifth place overall.

At the post-event awards ceremony, Scotland’s Darcey Carter was awarded the Batter of the Tournament trophy with 248 runs and Thailand’s Thipatcha Putthawong won the Bowler of the Tournament award with 15 wickets. The UAE’s skipper, Esha Oza was named the Player of the Tournament for scoring 187 runs and taking seven wickets.
