17 March - Tauranga - West Indies player Shamilia Connell pre-match press conference
Reporter: How is the team doing? We’re seeing a couple of niggles or a couple of injuries, is everyone available?
Shamilia: Oh yeah, we did have a few niggles, but everyone is available. There's nothing to the injuries so everyone's should be available for tomorrow’s game.
Reporter: How are you coping with this tournament lifestyle?
Shamilia: Well I guess the team is quite accustomed to that now. We know, we've been together for quite some time we went to South Africa before coming here, so we are kind of accustomed to just travelling about – so yeah.
Reporter: You've never played Bangladesh in a one day before. What have you made of them so far in the tournament and what do you expect?
Shamilia: We can see that they're very competitive. We're just going to go there and give our best and you're not going to underestimate them. We're just going to go down there and play our game. You see the them, they put up some very good scores and they beat Pakistan you know and Pakistan was one of the teams that was looking to give them a challenge, but we're just going to go and play our A game and just go on.
Reporter: The New Zealand pitches are supposed to be a little bit of a help to fast bowlers like yourself. Have you gotten that assistance from those pitches?
Shamilia: No, the pitches that we’ve played on so far, haven’t given us that much assistance. So they're a bit flat, so I believe that it’s a clear batting pitch – so a lot of us - it's great tournament [inaudible 03:35]
Reporter: Right and what's your mindset going into this Bangladesh game the West Indies woman - you guys have won two, you've lost two. What's your mindset going into this Bangladesh game?
Shamilia: Yeah, we know we've lost two games but you know, we have put that behind us. We're just going to just go there and give our best - what's gone is gone and we just have to look to just bring our A game in these next three games as we look to qualify for the semi-finals. So we just got to go there and bring our A game.
Reporter: Yeah, just final quick one for me. Hayley Matthews said in her post match press conference after the Australian loss that two or three out of the first four matches. You guys were hoping to win and you fancy yourselves with the last three matches in this league stage. Do you share those sentiments from that Hayley Mathews?
Shamilia: Yeah, before we played our first couple of games, we knew our four games upfront was going to be very difficult, and you see – if we snatch up two wins, that will put us in a good position going into the last three. And so for we have done that, so we just have to continue to just play good that we played in the first half of the tournament and hopefully see ourselves in the semifinals.
Reporter: What were your thoughts coming Into this World Cup, see that you have had really good results in 2021?
Shamilia: Just me and my standards that I set for myself. My goals. You know last year, early last year 2021 I looked at my career stats and I wasn’t satisfied with that. So I say coming in – this is part of me just got to keep building are working on myself and being able to give my team a good start. So far, you know, I've been able to do that. But try to just be consistent.
Reporter: Bangladesh have put up a really good fight in terms of the teams that they’ve played so far – they beat Pakistan, what change of plans would you have had in terms of seeing how they’ve performed so far in this tournament?
Shamilia: I just guess we just got to stick to our game. We are not going to just dwell on what they're doing that much. We just got to just stick to our game plan. You know, if we go and it's not working. They will adjust accordingly but we're just going to stick to our plan and just -
Reporter: We played NZ here in Tauranga, in our first game and we won -small margin but we won nevertheless, going to play here again tomorrow. What vibe, what feel does this ground bring to the tournament?
Shamilia: Really, it was our first win for the World Cup in the tournament you know so we had the right conditions and I guess the girls are kind of feeling energetic because you know, we are here our first game and I guess you're looking to that mark.
Reporter: Any pressure team - England won yesterday and teams are kind of launching up in terms of similarities in points, any nervousness looking at where we might end up with just focus on getting a win?
Shamilia: I don't think we have the time to actually look at what other teams are doing. We just have to go there and just win every game going forward – let the points table just do the work for yourself. We’re not going to just dwell on what other teams are doing. We're just going to focus on us as a team and just do our best.
Reporter: I thought that was a really interesting question - did this tournament. It's very quick because you guys are playing you know, and before you know it - before I know it, you guys are back on the field again in another match - with the tournament moving so quickly how challenging is it to rebound from losses and to keep the momentum going?
Shamilia: Well, yeah, even though we lost, you know, there was learning points in some of the games, so we just took the learning and you know, we just have to keep moving. We got to keep building on working on us as a team. Cricket is a funny game, you're not going to always be able to be victorious, but you just have to learn and just continue to do your best.
