Maxwell returns, Australia call up three uncapped players

Aus tour of Eng

Australia have named the uncapped trio of Riley Meredith, Daniel Sams and Josh Philippe in a 21-member touring squad for their limited-overs series in England.

Glenn Maxwell, who was sidelined with injury during their tour of South Africa and the Chappell-Hadlee series, returns to the squad, along with Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Lyon.

Usman Khawaja and D'Arcy Short miss out, while Jhye Richardson remains sidelined with a shoulder surgery.

Philippe, 23, is an explosive batsman, who was Player of the Match in Sydney Sixer's BBL title win last season. Left-arm pacer Sams was the leading wicket-taker in the BBL, finishing with 30 for Sydney Thunder.  Meredith, 24, is seen as another promising right-arm quick for Australia.

“It’s a squad with great depth and a sprinkle of some exceptional young players,” Trevor Hohns, the national selector, said. “We are very pleased with the final group which was chosen with a view to continuing our recent form in T20 cricket and the longer-term goal of returning to the top in the 50-over game."

Australia are set to play three ODIs and three T20Is in England in September, in a bio-secure environment. They are scheduled to play intra-squad warm-ups before the series in Southampton and Manchester, starting 4 September.

Coach Justin Langer said: "It’s vital for cricket that we do everything we can to keep the game going in these tough times. I am delighted with how the players have returned to their states from the break back in March. The whole squad has come back fitter and stronger, which is great testament to each of them."

Cricket Australia announced that assistant coach Andrew McDonald would not travel with the squad because of his IPL commitment as head coach of Rajasthan Royals. Troy Cooley and Trent Woodhill, coach of Melbourne Stars WBBL team, have been named to support Langer.
