After electing to bat, Mohammad Shahzad gave Afghanistan a decent start, scoring a 19-ball 36, before being caught in the deep by Collins Obuya, the Kenya captain. However, sizeable contributions from the middle order – Asghar Stanikzai (43), Mohammad Nabi (26) and Samiullah Shenwari (39 not out) – helped Afghanistan post a total of 162 in 20 overs.
Kenyan left-arm spinner Shem Ngoche picked up two wickets, while Hiren Varaiya, Nelson Odhiambo, Ragheb Aga and Obuya picked up one each.
Kenya needed its batsmen to get off to a good start and chase down Afghanistan’s 162, but instead, it got off to a dreadful start. Hamid Hassan, the Afghanistan pacer, picked up two wickets in his first over and backed it up with another in his second. Kenya was reduced to 7 for 4 in the fourth over.
The highest partnership in the innings (20) was for the eighth wicket shared between Shem Ngoche and Nelson Odhiambo. Rakep Patel (11) and Odhiambo (13) were the only batsmen to reach double figures in the innings as Kenya was bundled out for 56 in 18.4 overs.
Hassan returned 3 for 4 in three overs, and was named Man of the Match, while Mirwais Ashraf and Samiullah Shenwari picked up two apiece.
