2005 VCA Westpac (WBC) Pikinini Cricket League Report

Introduction

****This year 2005 ‘Westpac’ Pikinini Cricket League is significant for junior cricket in Vila especially kids in primary schools who geared up for the games on match days. Westpac Pikinini Cricket League 8’s Cricket is made up of schools around Efate. The tournament had been played for the last 5 years and there are quiet a number of schools competing in the tournament. The number of participating schools has increased as well as the competition itself gets stronger each year especially when new schools enter the tournament.

Participation

22 schools played in the Westpac Pikinini Cricket League in 4 pools of 5 & 6 teams. The games were played for 5 weeks. The games were played in two categories, Under 10 and Under 13 (See draw attached) Competition between schools is very competitive compared to the last 5 years. Few of the schools had to travel 15 – 25 km every week to play while others only need to walk to play.

Sponsorship

****Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC) who has been sponsoring the tournament for the last 4 years has again played an important role in sponsoring the 2005 Pikinini Cricket League cricket tournament. WBC has been generous to sponsor the tournament. Vanuatu Cricket Association acknowledges their support in the development of junior cricket in Vanuatu. Without their support this tournament wouldn’t be a success.

Positive factors ****

  • The number of schools participating in the Westpac (WBC) Pikinini Cricket League tournament continues to increase and the competition is attracting the parents to come and watch their kids play where as in the past parents just dropped their kids off and left.
  • Competition between schools is competitive compared to the last 5 years
  • There were a number of individual performances. A lot of the kids have the talent to play good cricket. Vila East School again proved them strong after they beat Freshwater in the grand final for the U/10 category. In the U/13 category Vile East School retain their title by defeating Erakor in the grand final.(Finals results is attached)
  • Primary schools teachers’ assistance in umpiring and arrangements of school teams turning up each week for the games continues to impress us. The primary school teachers have played an important role in organize setting up of the grounds as well as assisting the VCA development team in umpiring and scoring and most importantly coaching their teams.
  • WBC has done a lot in regards to the sponsorship. More and more positive comments have been received from the teachers and even a few parents have indicated that they will help in next year’s tournament.

**** Negative factors

  • A few of the school teachers haven’t done much in regards to the game itself. It has come to my attention that they are sitting back and relax while we (and the other teachers) do all the work. It would be more fun and enjoyment if everybody gets involved rather sitting back and relax.
  • Some schools don’t show up on match days and that really affects the program and it is a waste of time for some schools after spending so much money on bus fares shows up while others failed to turn up on match days. It is very important that they notify us if they are not available to play. It is normal that some schools just don’t show up on match days due to financial problem and religious activities but it would be nice if they notify us.

Acknowledgment

Teachers have played an important role by giving in their time and efforts for helping out in the games. They are invaluable volunteers for cricket in Vanuatu. Without them the tournament won’t be a success. Finally thanks to the Westpac Banking Corporation (WBC) for their continuous support in the development of cricket. The Barbeque was enjoyed by all the kids as well as the teachers. Special mention goes to Mike Reid and his staffs from Westpac Bank for doing the barbeque and for making the day a success.
