The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia saw 16 teams participating across seven locations. The highest risk period for events is generally prior to the event where approaches/grooming often takes place, followed by the initial group stage matches.

Supporting the Anti-Corruption Managers (ACMs) and investigation capability deployed to the event, an Intelligence Desk was established within the tournament office to ensure all integrity-related reporting was coordinated in a timely manner. The deployment of Integrity staff that includes Anti-Corruption, differs between ICC events, bi-lateral series and domestic leagues. This is based on a number of factors including the nature of the event, assessed risk of corruption, time zones, available resources and in the case of domestic leagues, if the ICC ACU is contracted to cover the league

For the two women’s events held recently in South Africa, intelligence and investigation support was managed remotely for the U19s, while a member of the ICC ACU team was deployed for the first half of the senior’s event (highest risk period), in the capacity of education, intelligence and investigation. During this period, a serious corrupt approach was reported – this is currently under investigation by the ICC ACU. This incident highlights not only increased corruption risks associated to the women’s game, but the potential for approaches to come from someone known, including past or current players.

As part of the pre-event activities at these events, all teams were briefed on anti-corruption, anti-doping, and safeguarding. The focus for the Anti-Corruption Session was the role of the corruptor and how, and why, they target players. To demonstrate this, the teams were shown a reconstruction of an interview with a corruptor.

The intention is to adapt this video into a resource that will be made available to all Members for educational purposes. In addition to intelligence and investigation planning, work has also commenced on plans for future anti-corruption briefings including the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in October/November.
