23 March - Wellington - South Africa Captain Sune Luus pre-match press conference
Reporter: A general question about tomorrow's game. Sune first up, obviously tomorrow, another exciting game. Still, obviously need a win to confirm the semifinal spot. How you feeling? How's the team feeling ahead of tomorrow's game, particularly after yesterday's game?
Sune: Yeah, now pretty confident. Obviously yesterday didn't go the way we planned. But that's cricket. I think tomorrow we have a great opportunity to rectify some things we didn't do as well yesterday. But a great opportunity for us tomorrow to secure that semifinal spot and just play good cricket.
Reporter: My question is just about are all players fit and available to play for tomorrow's match?
Sune: Yeah, there's still a bit of question marks around some players, but I'm sure the medical staff is on that. And yeah, we'll have some reports back this afternoon or early tomorrow morning.
Reporter: Just particularly about Masabata Klass. Will she be available tomorrow?
Sune: Yeah, I'm not sure about that one. We still are waiting on medical for that.
K: And also about the larger scene. Do you think the yesterday's match. gave you confidence that after a little bit of low scoring in the first few matches the team can go past 250 against a quality bowling attack?
Sune: Yeah, I think if you look at yesterday's game, I think we batted brilliantly to get to 270 I think obviously they're one of the best bowling attacks in the world as well and for our batters to match that and to get 270. I think we did a brilliant job and I think that's just evident to how hard the batters have been working and what we can do. It's just about getting the bowlers to fight on the day as well and obviously, it didn't happen yesterday, but I think that's a rare thing for our bowlers, and I'm pretty sure they'll bounce back again tomorrow.
K: Just about your bowling yesterday. Do you think Sune the captain has been a bit harsh on Sune the bowler?
Sune: Yeah, probably, but I guess that's how it works. You always want to do well for your team and contribute and as a captain you always put that extra pressure on yourself as a bowlers as well. But I think every game I'm gaining more confidence.
Reporter: Just on the West Indies, Sune - obviously we come from a four match series back home against the West Indies, just reports on them and that series come into play to the sides confidence in winning against them tomorrow?
Sune: Yeah, now obviously that series helped us a lot to prepare for the game tomorrow. I think we know all the players pretty well and we know what their game plan is going to be. I think it's just for us to stick to our game plan and keep doing the basics right? And to make sure we are very clinical tomorrow.
Reporter: And just on yourself personally. With the bat you obviously strung in a few performances together in the in the series against West Indies as well as this World Cup. How do you feel about your batting radius at the moment?
Sune: Yeah, no, it's always nice to contribute as a batter and especially as a captain to try and lead from the front. I think I've been staying very calm at the crease and just trying to deal with the situation once. So yeah, it's been going great. I'm just trying to do that every game and just contribute as much as I can.
Reporter: And obviously you've had a great partnership with Laura in the middle. What do you think? Firstly, two part question - you know her performances - consistency has been key for her, she's been rolling out performances match in match out. What do you think she's doing right at the moment from outside looking in? And then secondly, what do you think is the key for you guys to be continuing to better work together?
Sune: Yeah, I think Laura's world class. I know she always measures herself, up towards, you know, like a Meg Lanning or some of the greater batters in the world, Suzie Bates and all those kinds of players, but I think she's up there as well. And you always have to remember she's only 22 and she's breaking records already. So I think she's been phenomenal and she's been the glue to our batting lineup.
I think she would think she's batting too slow at times, but I think, if it isn't for her 90 or big 50 on the day, you know, we wouldn't be getting our scores that we've been getting. So I think she's been batting brilliantly and I think she just needs to continue that.
I think we have a great understanding in the middle. I think we trust each other between the wickets running. I don't know we're just batting well together.
Reporter: Just a word on Mignon - Fantastic catch from yesterday.
Sune: I know – phenomenal, she's one of the best fielders in the world -we all know this. And yesterday she just showed it again.
Reporter: And obviously with our bowling attack yesterday, not quite firing but also the emergence of Tumi coming back in the side. What do you think she brings that can help complement to the four prong senior attack?
Sune: Yeah, no, it was obviously her debut game yesterday. And to have your debut World Cup game against Australia's always going to be a tough one. But I thought her attitude on the field was brilliant. She didn't necessarily have the best bowling spell, but to come back with a brilliant run out to get rid of Mooney I think that just showed her character and courage as well. So I think you know, she gets the opportunity again, she'll definitely rectify her bowling innings or bowling spell yesterday. And as long as she has a great attitude, she'll achieve great things.
Reporter: And just lastly, obviously going into the last two games with a record of five to five, but still needing that one result to confirm really the final spot. How do you look from the team - looking at these last two games and the energy and the environment in terms of approaching it?
Sune: Yeah, obviously I think every team member knows that the next two matches are really crucial for us and our dream is to win a World Cup and every game counts towards that. So I think you know, tomorrow the team's going to come out hard and we know that West Indies and India needs a win as well and we’re both their last games, so they're going to come hard as well. So we need to be extremely clinical tomorrow. We need both the batting and the bowling to fire as well. So it's really going to be tough matches I think it's going to be hard fought, but we're always up for the challenge and we have world class players. And I think it's definitely going to show tomorrow and the game against India.
