Matthew Mott, the former Australia women’s coach, was unveiled as the England men's white-ball coach on Wednesday, 18 May.

England have continued their coaching recruitment drive, hiring Australian women’s team mastermind Matthew Mott as their men’s head coach across the limited-overs formats for a period of four years. He is expected to join the side for their three-match ODI series against the Netherlands next month.

The appointment is an indication of the new direction the men's team are headed in, guided by recently-appointed Managing Director Rob Key. England men have split the coaching roles across red and white-ball formats, with Brendon McCullum appointed Test coach last week having excelled in the interview process.

Mott equally impressed when pitching his candidacy, reportedly beating out Paul Collingwood in the race for the job. A 2010 World T20 winner as a player, Collingwood also took coaching reins on an interim basis during England’s trip to the Caribbean earlier in the year.

Mott was Australian women’s coach from 2015, with the World Cup victory seven years later continuing a nearly invincible stretch for his team, in which they lost just two ODIs in 42 matches.

The 48-year-old was also touted for potential roles in the Australian men’s system. He signed an extension on his Cricket Australia contract in 2021, and has held the Women’s Ashes over England for the last four series.

The England men’s team begin their home summer with a three-match Test series against New Zealand as part of the ICC World Test Championship, before hosting India and South Africa in white-ball action in July.
