“Oh dear, what a mishap for the Indian skipper, she cannot believe it!”
Harmanpreet Kaur suffered a freak dismissal during India’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 semi-final against Australia at a crucial juncture in the game.
The India captain, who made it out into the middle despite suffering from illness, was playing beautifully to reach her half-century and put her side in contention to chase down Australia’s 172/4.
But a bizarre moment sent Kaur back to the dugout when her bat jammed in the wicket as she ran it in, leaving her short of her ground as she was run out for 52.
The India skipper was understandably devastated by the manner of the dismissal, and hauled herself from the field of play with her team still requiring a big finish.
And Kaur was seen with tears in her eyes as her side fell five runs short to depart the tournament at the semi-final stage.
The reaction from big figures in Indian cricket was swift and extremely sympathetic to Kaur's misfortune:
A tough loss for @BCCIWomen against Australia in the #ICCWomensT20WorldCup, but we couldn't be prouder of our girls for their spirit on the field. The team gave it their all & showed that they are true warriors. We stand with you, Women in Blue! #INDWvsAUSW

Tough luck Team India. #HarmanpreetKaur & #JemimahRodrigues looked like taking the game away but the Aussies fought back brilliantly & in the end India have fallen short. Harmanpreet’s runout was the turning point & India will be disappointed to miss out on the finals. #INDWvAUSW pic.twitter.com/RY06QHDrE0

Match winner at the crease and Run out in a semi-final. We have had this heartbreak before. Sad to see India out. Were running away with the game but Australia proved again why they are a v difficult side to beat. Well tried girls #INDWvAUSW pic.twitter.com/wNsVc3vb2D

Victors Australia will play either South Africa or England in Sunday's final, which will also be hosted at Newlands in Cape Town.
