England won the inaugural edition of the competition in 2009, after winning the final against New Zealand at Lord's in London.

Australia have been the most successful team in the tournament, having won the trophy thrice – 2010, 2012 and 2014. The Southern Stars also made it to the final of the 2016 edition, where the Windies defeated them to clinch their maiden title.
So far, all the editions of the tournament have been held alongside that of the men. However, the ICC Women's World T20 2018 will be a standalone tournament.
