Abrupt end for Rohit Sharma's side - India tournament review
Most Runs: Virat Kohli (296)
Most Wickets: Arshdeep Singh (10)
What went right?
The middle-order and the pacers clicked big time, which allowed India to dominate their group in the Super 12s. Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav were seen in sublime batting form, whereas all three frontline pacers in Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Shami came up with good returns.

Even Hardik Pandya kept giving regular breakthroughs to India, as the all-rounder finished the campaign with eight wickets to his name. He also played a magnificent 33-ball knock of 63 in the semi-final against England, albeit in a losing cause, and made a crucial 40 against Pakistan during the Super 12s.
Barring one loss to South Africa and a close game against Pakistan, India registered comprehensive victories in the other three games, and that was mostly due to the contributions of their middle-order and the pacers.

What went wrong?
The performance of the openers and the spinners wasn't up to the mark. Rohit Sharma was seen struggling throughout the tournament. In six matches, the India skipper averaged a meagre 19.33 while scoring at a strike-rate of 106.42. KL Rahul was seen gaining form with a couple of fifties during the Super 12s but he failed to deliver in key matches, including the semi-final.
In the bowling department, Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel were preferred as the first-choice spin bowling pair throughout the tournament but the duo weren't that effective as both of them conceded runs at an overall economy rate of over eight runs per over.

What does the future hold?
A transition was seen happening in the India T20I set-up even before this World Cup, with many youngsters getting opportunities to play in different series as key senior players were rested. That transition is expected to kick off once again as many senior players could be seen making way for the young guns in this format.
The likes of Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson and Prithvi Shaw have shown what they are capable of doing in this format and we might see them becoming vital cogs of the India batting line-up in the future. The next T20 World Cup will be played in the Caribbean and the United States in 2024. So, the transition has to start immediately if India want to go into the tournament with a settled team.
