Australia had been in charge of the Test from the time Steven Smith won the toss and New Zealand was shot out within two sessions on a green-topped surface.

As the pitch flattened out, Australia was able to score more freely, with Voges’ marathon double-century complemented by Usman Khawaja’s 140 effectively batting New Zealand out of the game after the first-innings exchanges.

The second Test starts in Christchurch on Saturday and will be the last international match for Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain.
