Australia women claim warm-up victory over West Indies

The Moors Sports Club ground in Colombo saw two usually free-scoring women's teams - Australia and West Indies - play out a low-scoring warm-up game ahead of the ICC Women's World Twenty20. Australia women won the match by 19 runs as neither side looked comfortable with the alien conditions.

Batting first after winning the toss, Australia women rode Jess Cameron's 28-ball 37 and Alex Blackwell's 21-ball 26 to end its 20 overs at 110-8.

The West Indians would feel they did a job even better than what the scoreboard reflects as they tried out all their bowling options, not necessarily bowling out the best performers. No one except Shaquana Quintyne bowled her full quota of overs, even though Shakera Selman (2-1-3-1), Stafanie Taylor (2-0-8-0) and Anisa Mohammed (2-0-10-0) were the most miserly on show.

The West Indies reply never really took off, as wickets feel with even greater frequency than in the Australian innings. Merissa Aguilleira, the captain, top-scored with 22 from 31 balls, while Shanel Daley, batting at No. 9, hit three boundaries in a 19-ball 20 to be the best contributors to the effort, as West Indies was bowled out in 17.1 overs for 91.

Ellyse Perry (3-22) was Australia's best bowler on the day while Julie Hunter and Jess Jonassen picked up two wickets apiece.
