BCCI provide update on Gill's availability

India's Test skipper Shubman Gill will take no further part in the ongoing Kolkata Test.

India Test captain Shubman Gill who suffered a neck injury while batting on the second day of the Kolkata Test, will take no further part in the game, the Board of Control for Cricket in India said in a statement.

Gill slog-swept a delivery for four over square leg off just the third ball of his innings, but immediately after completing the shot, he grabbed his neck, showing clear signs of discomfort. The physio was called in before Gill walked off the field for further assessment.

Gill was taken to the hospital following the end of the second day's play and remains under observation. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI Medical Team.

India enjoyed a strong start to the Test, bowling out South Africa for 159 on the back of Jasprit Bumrah's five-wicket haul. The hosts looked in control in response, heading towards a handy lead at 132/3, but the Proteas fought back to limit India's advantage to 30 runs.

India's spinner then came to the fore, and had picked seven South Africa wickets at the end of second day's play.
