Beach Cricket Carnival a Winner
The National Bank of Vanuatu (NBV) Beach Cricket Championships held at Mele beach provided fun in the sun for all involved. 17 boys and girls teams competed throughout the day in fun beach cricket matches.
Vanuatu Cricket Association staff and volunteers set up eight grounds along the beach and, despite the temptation of swimming in the water, all children tried their hardest for their schools.
Mr Jerry Ishmael, Head of Retail Banking stressed the importance of such sponsorship in the development of cricket in Vanuatu by involving kids at their early age. The venue in which the tournament is held gives the kids the opportunity in playing cricket in a different environment.
"NBV is happy to see the growth and popularity of the one day carnival as this is the sixth year that NBV has sponsored the beach cricket event and we are proud to be a part of cricket development," said Ishmael.
In his response, Pierre Chilia, General Manager of Vanuatu Cricket acknowledged the continuous support received from our local Bank.
"I wish to reiterate that this is the sixth year NBV has sponsored the Beach Carnival and every year the competition continues to grow and attracts new kids."
Following lunch, funded by the NBV, the finals for the Championships were held. Melemaat School faced Kawenu School in the girls final and the boys from Kawenu also competed in the final, against Suango.
Both matches went down to the wire, as the schools gave their all in order to win the NBV Beach Cricket Championships trophy. The girls from Kawenu edged out Melemaat to clinch the trophy by one run, and the boys from Suango proved too strong for Kawenu also. But ultimately all schools were winners on the day.
Vanuatu Cricket wishes to acknowledge NBV for their continuous support with the development of cricket and special mention goes to the 16 schools that participated in the cricket carnival.
