Bob Carter named head coach of New Zealand women's team

Carter has held multiple posts in the New Zealand setup, and has been the interim coach of the White Ferns since February. He replaces former Kiwi allrounder Haidee Tiffen, who stood down from the role in March this year and decided against reapplying for the role. Previously, Carter had two stints as assistant coach of the men’s team (2004-08 and 2012-14), before becoming the high-performance coach of the women's team.

“I see a lot of potential in this particular group of cricketers,” Carter said after his appointment. “We have a good blend of youth and experience that we can build from and I feel very positive about this next chapter of White Ferns cricket.”

The 59-year-old’s first assignment will be their series against South Africa comprising three ODIs and five T20Is, beginning 25 January next year,. Before that, he will oversee a training camp for the squad in Lincoln, starting 22 September.

Carter said that his focus lies on the two ICC tournaments that are lined up in quick succession, especially after their dismal run in the 2018 T20 World Cup, where they failed to advance past the group stage.

“It’s an exciting time to come on board with two big world tournaments on the horizon.

“We have the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia in February next year and the Women’s World Cup 2021 that we are hosting here in New Zealand - it’s a big couple of seasons coming up.

“We have a number of senior players who have been performing at the top of the international game and remain committed to working hard in bringing success to the WHITE FERNS. With two ICC World Cups coming up and the women’s game growing at all levels, it’s a great time to be involved.”

New Zealand Cricket’s chief executive David White welcomed Carter’s appointment, calling it a ‘positive step’ for the side. “We’re delighted for Bob and know he will do an excellent job. It’s been a progressive time for women’s cricket and this latest appointment is another positive step forward for the game."
