Bumrah expects tougher bowling challenge in the fourth innings

Bumrah was in scintillating form on day two, returning figures of 6/27, including his maiden Test hat-trick. While the 25-year-old has begun well in the fourth innings – 0/16 in five overs – he is sceptical about getting much assistance from the deteriorating surface.

While West Indies were bowled out for 117 in their first hit, Bumrah expects it to be an uphill task to bundle them out over the next two days. "Now the wicket has gotten a little better," he pointed out after the day's play on Sunday, 1 September. "So, the movement has gotten less than the previous innings. We have to bowl well, create pressure from all ends, so that will help us.

"On bouncy wickets, you can be greedy and you look to bowl short but you should not do that - you should bowl in good areas, create pressure and try and bowl full, so that was the plan going into the first innings. We were just trying to assess the situation as soon as possible and try and bowl accordingly."

Bumrah has had a terrific run in Test cricket so far, claiming 61 wickets. Having made his red-ball debut in South Africa in January 2018, the right-arm pacer has gone on to claim five-wicket hauls in four different countries.

Bumrah conceded that his display with the Duke ball in England last year filled him with confidence. He returned 14 wickets in three Tests at 25.92 in that series. “I played a lot of cricket in England, we played a lot of Test matches, so over there we bowled with a duke ball. So, there is a lot of movement with the duke ball so you get a lot of confidence in outswing, inswing, and whatever you are trying. So, that experience helped me here,” he explained.

Bumrah lavished praise on Virat Kohli, indicating that the India skipper is a big cheerleader for his bowlers. "The captain gives you a lot of confidence, that gives you a lot of self-belief," he said.

"When you bowl, you can express yourself, you can try whatever you want to do. That gives you a lot of confidence, not only me but each and every bowler is being backed by him so much. As a bowling unit, we are very happy and then we have the freedom to do what we want."
