Canada receives funding boost

Cricket Canada has received a major boost with the announcement that the sport will receive federal funding.

'The government of Canada welcomes Cricket Canada (national governing body) to the list of sports that are eligible to receive funding,' Canadian sports minister (secretary of state) Helena Guergis told Yahoo Sports while unveiling the new Canada kit on Friday.

Guergis said it was “an exciting day for Cricket Canada as a national sports organisation to have the opportunity to be recognized by the federal government.”

“We look forward to supporting future initiatives (by Cricket Canada),” she said.

It is believed that there are 40,000 cricketers across Canada at present, although with this new funding package it is hoped the sport will grow.
