CASE STUDY 2: Corruption attempt in Domestic T20

What Happened? In September 2015 Cricket South Africa ACU received reports that former South African cricketer turned commentator, Gulam Bodi, had approached players to corrupt the T20 Ram Slam held in November and December 2015.

Although these players rejected Bodi’s proposal to engage in fixing during the Ram Slam, Bodi continued in his attempts to corrupt other players and successfully recruited 6 players who met the fixers together with Bodi. The plan was to fix certain matches of the tournament in order to make significant profits from the fixing. The investigation revealed that Bodi was working simultaneously with two separate ’fixing’ syndicates who were likely unaware of each other’s existence.

Consequences*:* Bodi received a 20 year ban from cricket (5 years suspended) and the 6 players involved in this investigation accepted sanctions for various corruption related charges, ranging from 7 – 12 year bans from involvement in cricket. Although there was no evidence of the planned fixes being successful, the corruption scandal had an impact not only on individual players and teams, but the game as a whole. The Ram Slam series was discontinued in 2016.
