Chanderpaul closes in on century

Shivnarine Chanderpaul's unbeaten 69 guided the West Indies to 208 for 4, with an overall lead of 427 against Bangladesh, at stumps on the third day of the second and final Test on Monday (September 15).

After captain Denesh Ramdin, the West Indies captain, decided not to enforce the follow-on despite a first innings lead of 219 when Bangladesh were dismissed for 161 in the morning session, Bangladesh slipped to 100 for 4 before an unbroken fifth-wicket stand of 108 between Chanderpau, who scored his 66th half-century, and Jermaine Blackwood (43 not out) ended Bangladesh's hopes of triggering a complete batting collapse.

The pair came together when the West Indies had lost its third and fourth wickets in the space of two overs after Darren Bravo was bowled and Kraigg Brathwaite edged to slip. The West Indies was in need of some stability after Bravo and Kirk Edwards fell cheaply.

Earlier, Brathwaite and debutant Leon Johnson put on 76 runs for the first wicket before Johnson was bowled for 41. The opening pair had fallen 24 runs short of being the first West Indies opening pair ever to compile century stands in both innings of a Test after having put on 143 in the first innings.

In Bangladesh's innings, only Mahmudullah offered significant resistance with a 53, his second consecutive half-century. Shafiul Islam was his able foil in a 45-run eighth-wicket partnership. The partnership held West Indies's progress for an hour until the Shafiul gave Ramdin a catch - his fifth in the innings off Shanon Gabriel.

Kemar Roach did not add to his five-wicket tally from the previous day. Spinner Sulieman Benn, however, picked up the last two wickets to ensure a huge advantage for the West Indies at the start of their second innings.

Having been unbeaten on 85 and 84 in his two previous innings in the series, Chanderpaul has yet to be dismissed in this series, and has amassed 645 runs, with just one dismissal in his last seven Test innings against Bangladesh.
