McCarthy's involvement in the first ODI was cut short when he left the field just five balls into the opening over of England's innings. Scans performed since have revealed a torn muscle in the back of his knee which will rule him out of both remaining fixtures.

Pacer Rankin meanwhile has been removed from the squad to manage a flare-up of a pre-existing back injury.

National Selector Andrew White described Chase "a direct like-for-like replacement for Boyd [Rankin]", adding that the 26-year-old "has been bowling really well in the nets, having made adjustments to his run-up over last 6 months, and has impressed coaches."

George Dockrell – who made his ODI debut for Ireland in 2010 aged just 17 – provides another spin option in a squad already strong in that department, with frontline spinners Simi Singh and Andy McBrine both having played in the first ODI, and Paul Stirling's part-time off-spin also available.

Despite ultimately losing the first match quite comfortably, White was certain the players would be up for the contest come Saturday. He was also full of praise for 21-year-old Curtis Campher, whose unbeaten fifty on debut was a highlight for the visitors.

"While yesterday’s performance had some positives to come away with, the players will be keen to bounce back with a stronger performance in tomorrow’s match," the selector said. "Over the last 6 to 12 months our batting has been our strong suit, so we are hoping that yesterday’s performance was an aberration stemming from being the first competitive match in almost five months."

"The Selectors are, of course, delighted with Curtis Campher’s debut – his positive play, composure under pressure and energy with the ball was very pleasing to see – to be making your debut against the world champions was highly pressurised, so for him to respond so well is a credit to his temperament and confidence to play at this level."
