Clea Smith pulls up stumps
Australia and VicSpirit player Clea Smith has announced her retirement from all forms of the game following a 14-year career and more than a decade representing her country.
The 33-year-old fast bowler - who played one Test (against England in 2005), 48 ODIs and 13 T20Is for Australia - said that it was "time to move on".
"I have had wonderful experiences through cricket, achieved more than I thought I ever could and it feels like there are now other things in life I want to do," Smith said.
Smith cited being a part of the Southern Stars' successful ICC World Twenty20 campaign in 2010 and her WNCL titles with VicSpirit as her favourite memories during her time in the middle.
"The ICC World Twenty20 in Barbados was a surreal experience - going from thinking I wasn't being picked to winning the Final off the last ball was incredible," Smith said.
"The WNCL titles just meant the world to me, to win with the people you have shared blood, sweat and tears with every day," said Smith, who played 117 WNCL and 24 WT20 matches for Victoria, claiming 157 wickets between 1998 and 2011. Smith is one of only three bowlers, with Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars Head Coach and VicSpirit coach Cathryn Fitzpatrick and teammate Kristen Beams, to have taken a hat-trick in the WNCL and recognises Fitzpatrick as the best player she has played with.
"She has had an incredible influence on my entire career; her preparation showed me what I had to do to make it as a bowler," Smith said. The 33-year-old is hoping to maintain some role within cricket. "I would love to give back to the game, in what role that would be we will see."
Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland paid tribute to Smith's career.
"Clea has been a very important member of the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars squad and her passion and experience will be sorely missed.
"We wish her every success in the future and I thank her for her commitment to Australian cricket over the last decade," Mr Sutherland said.
