Comprehensive India garner a record win in Mumbai
On the back of a dominant display with bat and ball in the first innings, India had secured a massive lead of 292 runs. However, the Women in Blue decided against enforcing the follow on last evening and decided to extend their advantage on the scoreboard.
Attacking knocks from Harmanpreet Kaur, Jemimah Rodriguez, and Smriti Mandhana helped India to 186/6 in merely 42 overs. India declared before the start of play on the third day, having already set a mammoth target of 479.
After seeing off the first few overs, England were rattled by the new ball pair of Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar. The latter troubled the England batters with her new ball skills and picked three wickets. Vastrakar scythed through the England top order and reduced the side to 68/4 by the 15th over mark.
Deepti Sharma took charge thereon and along with Rajeshwari Gayakwad finished the England innings at 131. Deepti ended with 4/32. Her cumulative match figures, were 9/39 to go with 87 runs. The all-rounder was awarded the Player of the Match award for her returns.
India’s margin of victory was the best in terms of runs in women’s Tests. This is their first-ever win over England in a home Test.
Harmanpreet Kaur’s team will now face off against Australia for a one-off Test at Wankhede from 21 December.
