Cricket returns to Labasa in Fiji

Cricket makes a historic return to Labasa this weekend after a lengthy absence from the Fijian competition.

The first match in almost a decade will be held at the Labasa College ground on Saturday between teams Bulileka and Lau as cricket continues to experience strong growth around the country.

The Labasa Association officially rejoined Cricket Fiji in September and has two teams registered. Officials will also hold a Level 1 coaching course and scorers course at the College early next week.

Cricket Fiji will invest around $20,000 over the following year to help with the rebuild, which will include supplying a full kit, which all new organisations receive, a schools kit and a synthetic grass cover for the wicket.

It is currently the only playable ground in the Northern Division.

Cricket Fiji high performance manager Stephen Jenkin said it was fantastic to see Labasa involved in the sport again.

"We're delighted to have them back, it is great to see the continued growth of cricket in Fiji," Jenkin said.

"There are a lot of talented players in Labasa and we are looking forward to including them in our junior and senior representative teams."

Four Labasa players have recently been selected in the Fiji under-19 All Stars squad which will take part in the East Asia Pacific tournament in Christchurch in February.

The region was a former stronghold of the game over a decade ago with two grounds and practice nets, but commercial development of the grounds forced their closure.

New Labasa president Johnny Salele, who was appointed at the association's first annual general meeting in June, said it was a proud moment for the region.

"We are looking forward to developing the game to ensure a strong future for cricket in Labasa," Salele said.
