Leeds: England swing bowler Ryan Sidebottom’s injury has paved the way for Nottinghamshire's fast bowler Darren Pattinson, who earned his first Test cap in the second Test against South Africa.

The 29-year-old Pattinson has appeared in just 11 first-class matches. He was called up as cover and joined the squad only yesterday after net practice and replaced injured Ryan Sidebottom in the team this morning.

The fast bowler, in his first season of county cricket, has taken 29 wickets at an average of 20.86 to force his way into the England side ahead of the likes of Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison.

Earlier, South Africa won the toss and chose to bowl against England on an overcast morning on the first day of the second Test at Leeds.

England allrounder Andrew Flintoff replaced Collingwood, who followed a disappointing series against New Zealand with another low score in the drawn first Test against South Africa.

South Africa named an unchanged team with opener Neil McKenzie passing a fitness test on his injured groin.
