New Zealand opener Devon Conway created history in Mount Maunganui by becoming the first player from his country to score a double-century and a century in the same Test.

Conway achieved the feat just before tea on the penultimate day's play at Bay Oval in the third and final Test between New Zealand and the West Indies when he brought up his hundred in the second innings with a simple cut shot off Anderson Phillip.

It saw Conway reach triple figures in the second innings of the match, with the in-form left-hander adding an unbeaten century to the superb knock of 227 in the first innings that helped the hosts to a mammoth total.

Conway in the process became the first person from New Zealand and just the 10th player overall to have scored a double-century and century in the same Test, with the 34-year-old joining an illustrious group that includes Brian Lara, Graham Gooch, Kumar Sangakkara and more recently Marnus Labuschagne and Shubman Gill.

It was Conway's seventh Test century overall, with the Black Caps reaching tea on the fourth day at 192/0 and with a lead of 347 and four sessions remaining in the ICC World Test Championship contest. New Zealand eventually declared at 306/2 while West Indies' openers gave them a positive start, adding 43 runs without loss at stumps.

The opening pair of Conway and Tom Latham broke several records during the Test.

Along with Conway, Latham (101) also scored his second century in four days as the pair became the first openers to score twin tons in the same game in all first-class cricket.

They also broke the record for most aggregate runs scored by an opening pair, as they put up 515 runs between them across the two innings. They powered past the previous record by 100 runs, which was previously held by Graeme Smith and Neil McKenzie of South Africa against Bangladesh in Chattogram in February 2008.

They were also the first pair of batters to put up a triple-century stand and a century-stand in the same Test as they put up 323 in the first innings and then 192 runs in their second innings.

The duo now hold the record for most aggregate runs as openers as they scored a combined 565 runs, Conway (327) and Latham (238). The previous record was held by South Africans Herschelle Gibbs and Graeme Smith, who scored 550 runs in the First Test against England in Edgbaston in 2003.

New Zealand currently lead the three-match series 1-0, following a draw in Christchurch and a nine-wicket triumph in Wellington.
