Dominant West Indies go 1-0 up in Mirpur
West Indies batters backed their splendid bowling effort to coast to an eight-wicket win in Mirpur.
A stellar effort on Day 4 helped West Indies take a 1-0 lead in the two-game ICC World Test Championship series against Bangladesh.
This loss meant that Bangladesh slipped one position in the ICC World Test Championship standings, and are now at the fifth place with a point percentage of 47.62, whereas India with 51.52 are now at the fourth place.
The day began with Bangladesh already precariously placed at 79/6, and Jomel Warrican ensured that West Indies had the early advantage, getting Jaker Ali to edge one to Roston Chase at the slips.
Nayeem Hasan (52) whipped up resistance but Warrican and Roston Chase were a difficult prospect on a slow track. Eventually, Bangladesh were bowled out for 142. Chase (5/36) was the pick of the tourist bowlers, getting his fifth five-for in the format. A slender first-innings lead meant that West Indies were to eventually chase 170 for a win.
Bangladesh knew their spinners could be handful on the track, began the proceedings with Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam. But the West Indian openers John Campbell and Brandon King were more than equal to the task. Unleashing a flurry of attacking strokes against the new ball, the duo helped West Indies race past 50 in no time.
Rain hampered play intermittently, but West Indies openers kept up the attack, lifting the scoring rate even further after each break. In the 19th over, Campbell was dropped by Najmul Hossain Shanto, who then had to walk off the field after his thumb had been hurt.
Finally, Shoriful Islam struck for Bangladesh, cleaning up Campbell (49) when West Indies were 112.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul fell soon after, but Kavem Hodge provided able support to King (81*) as West Indies sealed the chase with eight wickets to spare.
The series now moves to Sylhet for the second Test which begins on November 5.
