EAP Trial New Live Scoring Program
The ICC East Asia-Pacific region has begun trials of the New Zealand based online live scoring program CricHQ through domestic cricket competitions in Fiji.
CricHQ is both an iPhone and iPad App that allows users to score matches with a single entry each delivery as well as providing live ball by ball scores, statistics and graphs straight onto the CricHQ website.
The company is headed up by CEO Simon Baker along with former Blackcaps captain Stephen Fleming and current Blackcap Brendon McCullum.
"I think this application can change the way we perceive scoring," said ICC East Asia-Pacific Regional Development Manager Kieran McMillan.
"I remember always dreading the ten overs you would be rostered on to score in club cricket on a Saturday. CricHQ on the other hand makes the job so simple and with the other features like run-rate worms and wagon wheels that can be viewed in real time it can also be a lot of fun. I believe it can work well in assisting our members to recruit new volunteers into scoring."
Cricket Fiji CEO Jon Symonds was also full of praise for the system.
"The scorers could not get enough of it to the point that at the end of the first day several of the younger scorers had already downloaded the app onto their iPods," said Symonds.
"Sitting in the office able to watch the live scores coming through in such detail made it so much easier for me to issue press releases even though I was not at the ground. It took the pressure off me that I did not have to rely on people passing me the details verbally," he said.
Pat Culpan from CricHQ was on hand in Fiji during the trial and was given the responsibility of training the Fijian cricket family on the use of the application. He believes there is a real place for this program throughout the Pacific.
"Use of the application was well received by both the ex-pats and the locals, and all were keen to give it a go," he said. "My training session lasted for all of an hour with everyone picking up how easy it was to use."
The ICC EAP office will further pilot the use of the application at the 2012 Pepsi ICC EAP Women's Trophy in Vanuatu in May when the program is linked up with the ICC EAP website to deliver live ball by ball scoring and statistics throughout the event.
