3rd ODI

Following an eight-wicket loss in the first ODI, England bounced back in the second game to take the series into an exciting decider.

The Joe Root special at Lord's will give England a much-needed confidence boost ahead of the final ODI. Root's hundred, and fifties from Eoin Morgan and David Willey, the No.8, reiterates the depth that England have in their batting.

Adding to their line-up, they have called up James Vince for the final match in place of Dawid Malan, who has been released to play for the England Lions along with Sam Curran, and with Jason Roy an injury doubt - a laceration to his right hand little finger sustained while fielding at Lord's means a fitness test will be required on gameday - the Hampshire captain may well be called into action. Kent's Sam Billings has been called up as further cover.

Vince hasn't played an ODI since October 2016. If he gets a chance to feature in the playing XI, England will hope he can continue his recent form from the domestic circuit, in which he scored 171 in the semi-final of the One-Day Cup, England's 50-over competition.

England were better able to handle the spin of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in the second match. But the Indian spinners have consistently been a threat all tour, quickly bouncing back from off days. The spin duo will again lead the attack, but the visitors will need their pacers to step up and keep the England batsmen in check.

India's concern is also their lower-order batting, which was exposed in the second ODI. Their last four batsmen just added 21 runs from 42 deliveries before being bowled out on the last ball. India will need someone to strike the way Willey did for England.

Key players

Joe Root (England): His recent struggles with the bat finally came to an end when he returned to form at Lord's with a hundred. After failing to go past 50 in each of his previous eight innings across formats, he top-scored with a brilliant 116-ball 113 – his 12th ODI hundred.

Yuzvendra Chahal (India): The Indian wrist-spinner has been one of the most economical bowlers in the series. He chipped in with a wicket in both matches, but while his spin partner Yadav was taking most wickets, Chahal played his part by keeping the flow of runs in check. England will also be wary of his variations.

Conditions

England have a good record at Headingley. They have won 19 of their 30 ODIs at this venue. In their last 50-over contest with India here, back in 2014, they won comprehensively by 41 runs. The forecast looks promising but a slight cloud cover is expected, which would mean that the Headingley pitch could aid the seam bowlers and there will be something for the batsmen too.
