England replied to Australia's first-innings total of 497/8d with 301, facing a deficit to 196. In their second outing, Australia moved to 186/6 before declaring, leaving England with a target of 383, with seven overs and three entire sessions of play remaining.

Pat Cummins then gave Australia the early advantage by snaring the wickets of opener Rory Burns and skipper Joe Root, both of whom scored fifties in the first innings, for ducks in the first over of England's second innings.

Bayliss said that batting through the final day would be a "big challenge" for England, but recalling the Headingley turnaround, suggested that "anything is possible".

"It’s a big challenge," said Bayliss after play on Saturday, 7 September. "It’ll take a couple of our guys, I think, to make good hundreds. They believe that they are good enough to bat for 98 overs, put in a good performance and save the game.

"We know it will be difficult, but as Ben Stokes showed last week, anything is possible."

Bayliss also revealed that the mood in the dressing room is "upbeat" and England are ready to face the challenge. "When you lose a couple of wickets like that close to the close is a little disappointing, but we are upbeat about what we might be able to do tomorrow. Hopefully, we bat well, save the game and have a beer afterwards.

"We already had a chat. Everyone is psyched to go out tomorrow and be the one or two guys who go out and score a hundred."
