Fiji Secondary School Competition Begins

After an absence of two years, the Suva Secondary Schools cricket competition begins on Wednesday 16 March with two games at Albert Park.

Six teams have entered into the competition which will run throughout first term with the final scheduled to take place on April 20, just prior to the Cricket Fiji Easter tournament.

The games commence tomorrow with Marist Brothers taking on Laucala Bay Secondary and John Wesley College playing International Secondary School.

Both matches start at 4pm and all games are Twenty20 format.

Laucala Bay are the defending champions from two years ago and have entered two teams in the competition, while Mahatma Gandhi Memorial is the sixth team involved.

Games will take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons for the next five weeks and the top two teams will contest the April 20 final.

The winner will then play against the victorious team from the Western competition for the chance to be crowned the national champions.

Cricket Fiji Development Manager Jo Rika is coordinating the tournament and said he also hoped to get the Northern Division involved for the next championship.

"It's great that the schools have helped work with us to get the secondary schools competition up and running again," Rika said.

"There will be over 70 students taking part in Suva and more in the western competition."

"The national Under 15 and Under 17 teams are drawn from these students so it's a good chance for them to play regular cricket and improve their skills."

Media are invited to attend the opening round of games tomorrow.
