Glenn Maxwell back, but no Marcus Stoinis in Australia's white-ball mix for South Africa tour

Stoinis, who opens for the Melbourne Stars, finished as the tournament's highest run-getter with 612 runs at an impressive average of 55.63 in the league stage. He also broke the BBL record for the highest individual score, belting an unbeaten 147 from 79 balls at the MCG last month, and was also crowned the Player of the Tournament.

"(Stoinis) was unlucky to miss out due to the makeup of the current top order," Australia men's national team selector Trevor Hohns said. "It is terrific to have a backup player of his calibre in such good form."

However, Stoinis' Stars teammate, Maxwell, who took a break from international cricket last October due to mental health issues, has found a place in both the squads and will make his return in Australian colours in both the formats in South Africa.

Hohns explained that the squads have been picked to find the right balance "with a focus on the specific skills each individual offers in their respective roles".

"It is fantastic to have Glenn back in both squads given his brilliant form in the middle order for the Stars along with his results with the ball," Hohns said in a statement. Glenn was one of the first picked in the most recent T20 team at the start of the summer, prior to his break from the game," he said.

Another notable inclusion in the squads is of the experienced middle-order batsman Matthew Wade, who has been picked on the back of his good form in the BBL while D'Arcy Short and Ashton Turner have been left out.

Mitchell Marsh, who led Perth Scorchers at the BBL this year, has also been drafted in both the squads, his first ODI call-up since January 2018 and T20I since October 2018.

"(Marsh) has been in tremendous touch with the bat for the Scorchers since his return from injury and is now back bowling well," Hohns said. His performances warranted inclusion in the area he operates as a powerful middle-order batsman and handy bowler."

Australia will first play three T20Is followed by as many ODIs against South Africa in February and March.
