Gony replaces Sreesanth for tri-series

Indian pace bowler S Sreesanth has been ruled out of the Bangladesh tri-series owing to a side strain injury. His place in the squad will be filled up by uncapped fast bowler Manpreet Gony.

Gony has impressed the national selectors after his good show at the recently concluded DLF Indian Premier League (IPL) where he played for Chennai Super Kings. The 24-year-old Gony picked up 17 wickets from 16 matches for his side who were finalists at the Indian inaugural event. He was also the highest wicket-taker in the Deodhar Trophy (a national tournament) where he took nine wickets in three matches.

Gony is the third uncapped player in the Indian one-day international squad that will be playing the tri-series in Bangladesh. The other two uncapped players include all-rounder Yusuf Pathan and spinner Pragyan Ojha.

Sreesanth’s injury is a minor one and the pacer is slated to return to the Indian squad for the Asia Cup later this month. He has been advised two weeks rest which will see him forfeiting the Bangladesh tri-series.

The Indian team will play the Bangladesh tri-series sans veterans Zaheer Khan and Sachin Tendulkar. Pakistan is the third team, along with India and the host nation, taking part in the tri-series which begins tomorrow (June 8). India will play its first match of the Bangladesh tri-series on June 10 against Pakistan.
