Haines ready for EAP Trophy challenge
Vanuatu vice-captain Patrick Haines is hoping his side can 'produce the goods' when it takes part in the ICC EAP Men's Cricket Trophy next month.
In an interview with the ICC website, he revealed he is looking forward to the opportunity of playing against the region's best sides in Twenty20 cricket for the first time.
As the new Associate member of the EAP what would you like to achieve at this tournament?
We would really like to put in a good performance that can help get us back into World Cricket League Division 8. It will be tough, but we hope that the team we have can produce the goods.
Several members of your squad are participating in the U19 World Cup Qualifiers in Canada in early September. How will you manage the bodies of the players who are coming off this exciting tournament?
It is something that we have discussed in depth between ourselves and we have come up with a plan on how this will be managed throughout their tournament. Although young and fit, back to back tournaments coupled with the long travel times will be very tough for these young cricketers.
Who is a player to watch from the Vanuatu team that you expect will perform well throughout the tournament?
Andrew Mansale (pictured) ? he is now the new Vanuatu captain having taken over the reins during our series against Fiji. He is arguably Vanuatu's top cricketer, he has been training well, is fit and raring to go in Samoa.
How has the team responded to the inclusion of the Twenty20 fixture to the 2009 tournament?
We think this is a great initiative and gives the tournament an added dimension and something everyone is looking forward to playing. It also gives Affiliates a chance to square off against our more illustrious opponents in PNG, Fiji and Japan.
What is your number one tip for keeping players fresh throughout the tournament?
I am sure our players will be looking forward to either ice baths or hot and cold showers. Recovery is the key to having a good run at this tournament and will be vital for our chances.
