Harris and Finch put on a 112-run stand for the first-wicket, bringing up half-centuries on an incredibly green Perth wicket.

The left-hander Harris impressed in particular, adept through the covers and driving down the ground, while his partner Finch found form after a lean first Test in which he managed just 11 runs. Finch was in glowing praise of his Victoria team-mate after play, as Harris reached 70 before falling to part-time off-spinner Hanuma Vihari.

“He’s a pretty chilled out character who just goes with the flow and that’s how he’s always been," said Finch. “He’s definitely got all the shots but the way he adapts his game and his game-plan depending on the wicket, depending on the attack, I think that will hold him in great stead going forward and we saw a glimpse of it today and it was pretty impressive.

"Batting out in the middle is always good fun with him, he keeps it pretty simple pretty relaxed, we just keep reminding each other to focus on what our game plan is and what our strengths are."

Finch’s stay at the crease was ended on 50, as Jasprit Bumrah had him trapped in front of his stumps. The Australian batsman served the Indian fast-bowler some special praise for his performance.

“The length he has bowled so far has been outstanding, he comes from wide of the crease but can also move the ball both ways which is a huge advantage for him,” said Finch.

“I think coming around the wicket to left-handers and straightening them so much is a huge asset to have. And then to the right-handers – we saw at the end with the ball to Tim [Paine] – the ball that took off and missed off-stump.

“He’s a good bowler, he knows his game very well, he doesn’t give you anything easy you have to feel as though you’re playing really well to keep him out but the scoring options aren’t there as much as you’d like to try and get on top of him. He’s just a world-class bowler which you expect.”
