Harris, Pattinson, Siddle star as Victoria win Sheffield Shield

Having been set a mammoth target of 388, New South Wales were bowled out for just 210 as Victoria won handsomely, with a day to spare in the five-day contest in Melbourne's Junction Oval.

James Pattinson was the star bowler for Victoria in the second innings, claiming 4/41. He had also picked up 3/30 in the first innings. Peter Siddle, who took 5/28 the first time around, was less effective in the second attempt, taking 1/54.

Throughout the match, the pacers dominated on a fast, seaming wicket. Victoria opener Marcus Harris had laid the foundation for his side's victory with a resilient 141 in the first innings, strengthening his bid to hold on to Australia's opening slot for the Ashes later this year, even as competition grows. He finished as the season's top scorer, with 1188 runs at 69.88.

Harris' hundred had helped Victoria post 289. New South Wales were bundled out for 121 in response, with Siddle running through the top-order.

The young Will Pucovski then scored a battling 51 for Victoria in their second innings, helping them to 219, even as Sean Abbott (4/82) and Trent Copeland (3/52) kept chipping away.

In a steep chase, New South Wales showed early promise through a 120-run partnership between Daniel Hughes (41) and Kurtis Patterson for the second wicket, but things started unravelling once the later spooned a catch back to Siddle to fall for an enterprising 76. Pattinson did most of the damage, but Scott Boland chipped in with 3/30 too.

Pattinson's haul of seven wickets in the match took his season tally to 26 wickets from seven matches at an average of 18.92. Siddle, too, finished with as many wickets from as many matches, although at a higher average of 24.53.

New South Wales' Copeland, who took eight wickets in the match, took his season tally to 52 wickets from nine matches to surpass Tasmania's Jackson Bird (50) and become the leading wicket-taker for the season.
