Cricket PNG announced the launch of a new cricketing concept - Hebou Women's Battle of the Codes Super 8's Cricket Trophy.

Thanks to Hebou Construction - a major partner of Cricket PNG - and the board staff, this new and exciting cricket concept will be played on Sunday, 7 February at the home of PNG cricket, Amini Park, where women from PNG's major sporting codes from around the country will try their hand at cricket.

Invitations were sent out to all the sporting bodies in PNG and so far eight sports have confirmed their participation in this inaugural event. They are as follows: Bowling Association, Canoeing Association, Netball Federation, Power-lifting Federation, Soccer, Softball Federation, Touch Rugby and Basketball.

'This event promises to be very exciting', said the General Manager of Hebou, Mitch Lutchini. 'The best female athletes in PNG will be on show for one day, and I'm sure that the netballers, softballers etc will blend in easily with their natural sporting ability and give a red hot go at cricket.'

The Hebou Battle of the Codes Super 8's will consist of teams of eight players playing 10 over per side matches, in a series of round-robin matches, followed by a final to determine the Champion Sporting Code. The Sports that will be competing in this event will be bolstered and assisted by current Port Moresby based women's cricketers, some of whom have represented PNG in cricket.

'This is a great indicative by Cricket PNG to give female athletes an opportunity to play in a sport which they might not be used to, get an opportunity to meet athletes from other sports and have a bit of fun on the way,' said Mitch.

This event is in celebration of the PNG Women's Lewas Cricket Team that will be going to the ICC East Asia Pacific (EAP) Women's Regional World Cup Qualifier, which will be held in Sano, Japan in early May 2010. Only the winning team of the ICC EAP trophy will progress to the next stage which is playing in a World Cup Qualification tournament where the top four nations go through to the actual World Cup. PNG is currently ranked 15th in the world.
