Holder leads the way as Windies take charge

Joe Denly and Rory Burns – who reached 1,000 Test runs with his first run of the morning – resumed, fighting well against a testing opening spell of bowling. But Shannon Gabriel soon produced a superb delivery, nipping back through the gate and bowling Denly for 18. In his next over, Gabriel snared Burns too, trapping him in front of leg stump with a full ball.

Zak Crawley produced a couple of confident looking strokes, but had scored only 10 when Jason Holder angled one into his pads and trapped him leg-before. Holder didn't have to wait long for a second, with Ollie Pope fending at one outside off and edging behind for 12.

Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler, stand-in captain and vice-captain respectively, fought back with 67-run partnership. But Stokes fell just seven runs short of his half-century as a full ball from Holder found the edge and was caught by wicket-keeper Dowrich. The West Indies captain made it two wickets in two overs as he then found the edge of Buttler's bat, with Dowrich once again completing the dismissal, this time with a spectacular one-handed catch.

Dom Bess produced a counter-attacking 31*, including some flashing drives and cuts, but failed to find support from either Jofra Archer or Mark Wood who both quickly fell to Holder. It is just the second time that the No.1 ranked Test all-rounder has taken six wickets in an innings, and his final figures of 6/42 are the best of his career.

James Anderson provided some support to Bess, and the pair combined for a vital 30-run stand for the last wicket before Gabriel bowled Anderson with a full, straight ball. Gabriel finished with figures of 4/62 as England were bowled out for 204 on the stroke of tea.

West Indies openers Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell provided a steady start to the visitors' reply in the final session. Campbell survived a couple of scares, as he was twice given out leg-before to Anderson but had the decisions overturned on review. It was third time lucky for Anderson however, as just four balls after the second overturned decision he once again pinned Campbell's pad, and this time the review couldn't save the West Indies opener.

Wood produced a fierce spell of fast bowling to Brathwaite and new man Shai Hope, but both batters remained resolute in defence and survived through until bad light forced play to be suspended and ultimately ending the day's play after 69.2 overs play. West Indies will resume tomorrow on 57/1.
