A first-innings score of 99 hadn’t looked like being enough for England, particularly when Australia recovered from the loss of two early wickets to reach 48/3 at the midway point of the chase.

But seven wickets fell for just 48 more runs as Australia were denied at the death.

A topsy-turvy match had swung back in England’s favour with a run of three wickets in seven balls through the middle overs, only for the Aussies to recover and move within touching distance of the target.

Only four runs were required to send them through to the World Cup final, with 15 balls remaining, before Milly Illingworth was brilliantly run out by Ryana MacDonald-Gay.

And, after seven consecutive dot balls had seen the tension ratcheted up to near-unbearable levels, England captain Grace Scrivens snaffled the final wicket to seal a last-gasp win.
